Wine Cellar Flooring Created by an Expert Can Help Age Wine Properly and Enhance the Beauty of Your Wine Room

In wine cellar construction, your chosen builder should be able to help determine the type of flooring that will suit your storage needs.

How does your choice of flooring affect wine aging?

Why should you have a professional install your flooring?

At Custom Wine Cellars New Jersey, we care for our clients’ collections. We carefully assess all of their requirements before the commencement of the design process. This will help us determine and install the right wine cellar components, including the flooring.

In choosing the flooring style and material, there are important factors to consider.

  • The location of the wine room
  • The weight of the bottles
  • The weight of the wine racks, tables, chairs, and other accessories/furniture to be placed in the cellar
  • The mood or ambiance that the owner wants to achieve
  • Budget
  • The ability of the material to withstand the humid conditions in refrigerated wine rooms

Considering these factors will help us create the New Jersey wine cellar flooring that your heart desires, and one that will help regulate the temperature and humidity levels. A popular option for cellar owners is reclaimed wine barrel flooring.

How Proper Flooring Installation Can Affect Wine Aging

The concrete floor must be sealed and have a spray foam application done before the barrel flooring could be installed.

Poorly installed wine cellar flooring can cause damage to your collection. Thus, it must be installed by a professional, like Custom Wine Cellars New Jersey.

Your flooring must be well-insulated (around R-19 insulation), like the walls and ceiling of your cellar. This can help stabilize the temperature and humidity in a climate-controlled room, which is important in preserving the quality of the wine.

For wine barrel flooring installations over concrete, we always see to it that the concrete is properly sealed and installed with a vapor barrier. We recommend Bostik’s MVP for the moisture membrane. We use only products which are compatible with Bostik’s adhesive.

When stapling the flooring, we make sure that the boards fit tightly, to prevent creaking and to eliminate visible gaps. For some gaps that require filling, we use only paintable urethane caulking, which complements the color of the flooring.

Well-insulated flooring will prevent moisture from building up in the cork, wine racks, and wine labels. Since moisture triggers mold growth, it is best to ensure that your wine cellar is tightly sealed.

Additionally, carpet should not be used in refrigerated wine cellars because it can be a breeding ground for molds, especially in humid conditions.

Attractive and Eco-Friendly Wine Cellar Flooring Option for Avid Collectors in New Jersey

Nowadays, “green” custom wine cellars are in demand around the world, including New Jersey. Many wine enthusiasts desire to have a state-of-the-art wine cellar, incorporated with recycled products. One of the trends in wine cellar construction is creating repurposed flooring for those who desire an old-world ambiance in their cellars and want to be friendly to our planet.

There are different flooring materials that you can use, to match your wine racks and shelving. Some of the common choices are stone, tile, bricks, marble, slate, and vinyl.

At Custom Wine Cellars New Jersey, we love the idea of adding environment-friendly features to residential and commercial wine rooms. We offer hardwood flooring made from reclaimed wine barrels.

Flooring Made from Used Oak Wine Barrels Can Create a Dramatic Entrance to Your Wine Room

For many years, oak barrels have played an important role in wine aging. Wines stored in these wooden containers obtain improved texture, flavor, and tint. The lifespan of an oak barrel is 5-7 years. After this period, the wine barrels can be recycled, instead of letting them rot in a landfill.

After breaking the barrels into long strips, they are engineered to create stellar flooring. We offer the Fontenay wine barrel flooring. With more than 24 years in the wood flooring industry, Fontenay is the first manufacturer of reclaimed barrel flooring.

They gather the barrel heads and mill them, to create three distinct flooring styles: Cooperage, Wine Infusion, and Stave. We can add a finishing coat using a waterborne finish.

Created with excellent craftsmanship and keen attention to detail, each custom flooring is a stunning piece of art. At Custom Wine Cellars New Jersey, we can add an old-world charm to your wine room with Fontenay reclaimed wine barrel flooring.

Styles of Wine Barrel Flooring

Each section of the barrel has a distinct color and pattern. What section of the barrel to use for flooring depends on the look that you are aiming for.

The Cooperage collection is made from oak barrelheads. These sections of the barrels consist of distinct stamps from the winery. These markings can add richness and character to any living space.

In Stave flooring, the wood from the outer sides of the barrels is used. It displays the unique markings created by the hoops or bands that wrapped the barrels.

The Wine Infusion collection is created using wood planks from interior parts of the barrels. Take note that these pieces of wood don’t have any markings found in the Cooperage and Stave Collections.

The wine that was once stored in the barrel imparts a rich red color on the wood. The woods’ color variation that has developed during wine’s maturation process adds drama to any floor.

Our 5/8”-thick wine barrel flooring has tongue and groove components, wherein the tongues and grooves are joined together to create sturdy flooring.
